I’m 32, and I’m a dad to three boys. I’ve noticed how easy it is to be right there with them and still have my attention somewhere else.
I’ll pick up my phone to answer one message. Then I’ll check Instagram. Then one of my boys is asking me to come look at something, and I’m saying “one sec” again.
It happens slowly, and usually without me even noticing. My phone gets more of my attention than I ever meant to give it.
My boys need my attention. Sometimes that looks like getting on the floor and building something with them. Sometimes it’s putting my phone away at dinner so I can actually hear the whole story they’re trying to tell me.
That’s why I’m starting Here With Them. For 30 days, I’m setting aside half an hour each day to put my phone away and give my boys my full attention. I’d love for you to try it with your kids, too.
